The GadB gene produces the glutamate decarboxylase beta protein which is responsible for the conversion of glutamate to gamma-aminobutyrate (GABA) by consuming one intracellular proton. This gene is found in the AR2 pathway (a pH-regulating pathway) in E. coli.
